Chen Xinyuan and Luo Kai, both from the Shenzhen Institute of Technology, won the gold medals in the categories of cloud computing and 3D digital games. This was the first time for Shenzhen contestants to win gold medals at a WorldSkills Competition.
Another contestant, Ouyang Wanqing, also from the institute, won an excellence award in the graphic design category.
The WorldSkills Competition, a biennial event, is the world’s largest, highest-level and most influential vocational skills contest.
This special edition is being held separately in 15 countries between mid-September and the end of November this year.
China sent 36 contestants to participate in 34 events, including the three events in which Shenzhen contestants participated in Switzerland and South Korea.
Shenzhen joined the WorldSkills Competition for the first time in 2015.
At the 43rd, 44th and 45th WorldSkills Competitions, contestants from Shenzhen won two silver medals in 3D digital games and industrial design categories, respectively, and two bronze medals and two excellence prizes.
China topped the gold medal tally with 16 gold medals at the 45th WorldSkills Competition in Kazan, Russia, in 2019.
Shenzhen now is preparing for the 46th WorldSkills Competition, which was postponed due to COVID-19. For the competition, the Chinese team has designated five training bases in Shenzhen for events such as graphic design, 3D digital games, and industrial design.
The Shenzhen Institute of Technology is one of 10 high-level technician institutes in Guangdong Province. As of the end of September, the city has 4 million technicians including 1.43 million with senior skills certificates. The city’s technical schools have entered into long-term cooperation agreements with 300 big enterprises including Huawei, Tencent and Amazon.
In October 2020, the city’s human resources and social security bureau and Shenzhen Municipial Finance Bureau worked out incentives to encourage participation in WorldSkills Competitions.
